"Jason Cantrell is the only Candidate with Extensive Experience and Proven Leadership in Juvenile Court."
_________________________________________ A MESSAGE FROM THE CANDIDATE
I feel compelled to serve in Juvenile Court and believe that my experience representing juveniles and parents as a public and private criminal defense attorney, in domestic and family law cases, and as a former elementary school teacher, gives me a valuable perspective. Our youth need and deserve guidance, support and constructive discipline. As judge, I will employ effective risk-screening instruments to recognize youth who need to be detained, as well as provide proven diversion and alternatives-to-detention programs that deter delinquent behavior and reduce youth recidivism rates i.e., Drug Court for 1st time offenders. I believe that parents and the community can help youth succeed if they are empowered. Therefore, I am committed to working with parents and the community at-large to establish innovative programs to address the health and social needs of families and youth, as well as increase the reliance on effective community-based services to provide multi-dimensional treatment and positive development opportunities.
My experience in Juvenile Court has also underscored the need to implement a youth re-entry process that provides support services and skills training to ensure incarcerated youth make a transition into society as productive citizens. For far too long our incarcerated youth have not been provided the tools needed to be successful post-confinement. Most importantly, I will advocate for the Youth Study Center to become a Model Youth Center in conjunction with other Juvenile Court Judges, the Orleans Parish School Board, the Orleans Criminal Sheriff’s office and the State of Louisiana.
Under my leadership there will be a responsible court. I will actively solicit grants and other funding resources to supplement the operating budget of Juvenile Court and recruit, train and retain a motivated staff to promote juvenile justice. I ask for your vote on Saturday, April 4th and thank you in advance for your support!
Sincerely,
Jason E. Cantrell
